ACTIVITY: Discuss the Productive Potential of Your Woods

Soils are an important driver in your woods because they influence the availability of water and nutrients. Also, sunlight is essential for plant growth. Finally deer can impact the plants you want to grow when they are seedlings.

Use Web Soil Survey and develop a soils map and output tables that describe the soils of your property. For your favorite tree species, what are the best and worst soils based on site index? Walk in your woods (or some woods near where you live) on the most productive soils and look at the upper canopy, mid canopy, and ground layer. How much light is passing through each layer? Finally, find some seedlings and determine how much deer browsing is occurring? Which species are most browsed in these woods?
